Work on ATLS 11 Continues

On Friday, October 18, 30 volunteer surgeons and coordinators joined ACS staff in San Francisco, California, to work on various components of the Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) 11th Edition. The teams focused on final edits to the policy manual, faculty manual, patient assessment scenarios, and pre- and post-test questions. Meeting in person helped streamline collaboration and foster innovative ideas as the ATLS 11 course nears its rollout. Thank you to those who dedicated their time and expertise.

REMINDERS

Plan for ACS System Outage in December

Due to a system outage from December 5 at 12:00 pm CT to December 9 at 9:00 am CT, the Trauma Education CMS and ACS Learning Management System (LMS) will not be available during this time. We strongly recommend that courses using the CMS and/or LMS not be offered from December 2 to December 15. Additional details regarding this outage will follow shortly. Contact traumaeducation@facs.org with any questions.

This system outage also will affect other aspects of the ATLS Program such as ordering course materials, accessing ATLS cards and certificates, and submitting/updating course reports and requests. We ask that you plan accordingly to ensure that all your ATLS Program needs are addressed prior to December 2.

Are You Ready for ATLS 11?

With the anticipated launch of the 11th Edition of ATLS (expected in July 2025), it is critical that everyone is prepared. In order to receive important updates and supporting materials, email addresses in the CMS must be current. A required “Course Faculty Update” module, required before Instructors can teach ATLS 11, will be sent out via email. Please help ensure contact information for all involved in teaching ATLS is current in the CMS. Access the CMS on the ACS website or email traumaeducation@facs.org for more information.

ATLS Coordinators Do Not Need to Submit Disclosure Forms

If you are an ATLS Coordinator, you are not required to submit a disclosure form. In order to prevent commercial bias from influencing any educational content, the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education requires that financial information be collected only from those in control of educational content, including Course Directors, Instructors, and Educators. Contact traumaeducation@facs.org for more information.

Review Grace Period Updates

All ATLS Providers have 6 months from the day of their expiration to take an ATLS Refresher Course to become reverified. Once the 6-month grace period ends, Providers must enroll in a Traditional or Hybrid Course to become verified again. Keep in mind that ATLS verification expires on the expiration date, and the grace period applies only to Refresher Course eligibility.

Reminder, the COVID-19 grace period for ATLS Instructors has ended. All ATLS Instructors are required to teach in four ATLS Courses during their 4-year verification cycle. ATLS Instructors whose credentials lapse may be required to complete the instructor training process again to maintain their Instructor status.
